Madame Grès (1903 – 1993) was reputed to be a genius of the couture profession. One of the most eminent and outstanding female fashion designers of XX century stated all her life:
“I wanted to be a sculptor. For me, it’s the same thing to work with the fabric or the stone”.
The retrospective of this stellar yet enigmatic couturer’s work is showcased in the most legitimate place -in Musee Bourdelle’s interiors in collaboration with Musée Galliera from March 25 to July 24, 2011.
The concept of the exhibtion created by the curator Olivier Saillard is the parallel of fashion and art – scuplure like gowns surrounded by Grecian sculptures. The exhibition consists of 80 timeless and sculptural pieces from private collections, contemporary artists, belongings of Musée Galliera, and about 50 original photographs of Richard Avedon or Guy Bourdin. The selection of the designs starts from the couturier’s ‘Alix’ period in 1934 until Madame Grès very last design commissioned by Hubert De Givenchy in 1989.

These emblematic dresses are the symbol of purity, minimalism style and apparent simplicity. The signature of the creations is the use of jersey fabrics with the special draping technique transforming 280 cm lenght material into 7cm width.
